Bears on the Beach!!

<< Psst, be quiet. You'll scare them off. >>

Coastal bear country includes cobble beaches, grassy-brushey areas and deep woods for cover.

To avoid disturbing the bears, the Sea Lion could not approach them too closely. Binoculars were an important aid to studying their behavior.

If you cannot see the bear on the right, zoom in by clicking on the picture.

Brown Bears, Grizzly Bears, Black Bears

Brown bears vary a quite a bit in color. The ones we saw ran from reddish brown to nearly black. These coastal bears belong to the same species as the Grizzlies of the North American interior.

Black bears also inhabit the woods of Southeast Alaska but they are smaller and more timid about showing themselves on the beaches.

Beachcombers

Brown bears are omnivores. They will eat about anything they can get their paws on, or jaws around. In June they were mostly waiting for the salmon course to begin. Meanwhile, veggies for dinner again!
