Currently the head of Endicott Arm is at the tongue of Dawes Glacier.
Ice Ahead
Our approach to the glacier face was impeded by the large amount of
ice.
Ice
Floe
The Sea Lion closed in as far as was safe and launched its Zodiacs.
"Calving!"
Your photographer had difficulty keeping up with the action.
I was reminded of John Muir who a century earlier explored similar
scenes in Tlingit canoes and often alone!
"Calving
Again!"
Our pilot Michelle maneuvered our Zodiac to within a quarter mile of
the glacier face. A 200' wall of active ice is a commanding presence.
The newly calved icebergs hit the water with huge splashes.
The
Shooter
From our Zodiac we also observed a 'shooter' at close range.
