Endicott Arm is a classic fjord, a tidewater channel carved by its
glaciers and currently more than 25 miles long.
Hanging Glacier
"What's the name of that glacier?"
"Some dumb glacier."
< < Mirth from the deck. > >
"No, I mean Sum Dum Glacier;
S - U - M - D - U - M."
Waterfalls
The meltwater from the icefields above spill over the abrupt edge of
the fjord. The saltwater below is green with glacial milk.
Ford's
Terror
This reversing tidal falls terrified explorer Ford but modern rafters
and kayakers dream of this remote challenge. Class 0 to Class 5, depending
on the tide.
Glacial
Cirque
Little remains of the glacier that carved this magnificent glacial
cirque high on the walls of Endicott Arm. The steep lateral moraines
are being reclaimed by vegetation. The white triangular face is a recent
rockslide. Thus the fjord continues to be reshaped even after the ice
has receded.
Dawes
Glacier
When we reached the head of Endicott Arm we were literally in 'uncharted'
waters. The Dawes Glacier has receded further since the last edition
of the GPS topo map!
