Totem Poles
The Tlinglits and other Native Americans of the Northwest Coast proudly
preserved the history of their families by erecting totem poles in front
of their houses.
At the Sitka National Heritage Park several examples were on display.
Two young men were carving a new pole to replicate the totem that had
stood before the house of one of their grandmothers.
The carefully carved reproductions we saw in Sitka and Petersburg carry
on this tradition.
