Icebergs of Le Conte Glacier

SE Alaska  > Dawes Glacier >

Le Conte Bay

After crossing the bar on the rising tide, we entered the realm of icebergs spawned by the Le Conte Glacier.

Wind Tunnel

The wind drives differential melting of the ice above the waterline creating pits and even tunnels.

Blue Ice

Stranded icebergs are eroded at the tide line creating large overhangs. These are perfect for observing the blue hues of the glacial ice.

Yes, the sunlight transmitted through the translucent ice really is intensely, incredibly blue!

Ice Sculpture

Stranded icebergs are sculpted by the sun and wind into shapes both familiar and alien.

Dirty Ice

Some icebergs are rafting glacial debris out into the bay.

Rice Crispies

Small of ice are rapidly melting in contact with the seawater. This collapses releases air bubbles with a smack, crackle, pop. This air has presumably been trapped in the ice for centuries.
