Bald Eagles

Back from the Brink

Bald Eagles are staging a remarkable comeback in Southeast Alaska. We frequently saw them diving for fish along our journey. These eagles have also learned that the fish canneriesis of Sitka and Petersburg also put out the dinner table.

Catching birds in flight, even these large birds of prey, was mostly beyond my photographic expertise.

Often they perched just a little beyond range. This immature bald eagle was fortunately bolder.

Easier to take pictures of our national bird at the Raptor Rescue Center in Sitka!

Eagle Release

While visiting, we were privileged to witness the return to the wild of two bald eagles that had been carefully nursed back to health by the staff.

"Volta" is the well-travelled 'poster child' of the Raptor Center. He can no longer fly on his own, so he is a frequent flier on Alaska Air.
