Stage-Gate Model |
A term popularized by Robert Cooper to describe
management of a project by stages of parallel activities, all of which must
be completed before moving the project into the next stage. The emphasis
is on bringing deliverables to a ‘gate’ where the clear decision
is made.

Phase-Review Model |
A term poularized by Larry Kerzner to describe
management of a project by phases of related activities that are reviewed
and approved before moving on to the next phase. The emphasis is on planning
those activities for the specific project.

Innovation |
The practical implementation of a creative
idea. If the creative idea is not put to use, it is not innovation. Our
vernacular has disturbed this distinction through the parallel use of the
adjective ‘innovative’ and noun ‘creation’. Most
‘innovative ideas’ are actually remain as ‘creative ideas
and a good many "creations’ are already actually ‘innovations’.

Invention |
A creative idea that can be patented. Most
patent law insists on novelty - the idea should not be ‘obvious to
one practiced in the art’.
What is obvious and what is not obvious is often the subject of legal debate. A patent gives the owner the exclusive right to practice the invention for a period of time in order to encourage the public disclosure of creative ideas.

NPD Portfolio Management |
Managing the entire set of product developments
that are underway at any one time.

Pipeline Management |
A term popularized by PRTM to describe managing a portfolio of activites to fit the pipeline of available resources. | ||
