Project Portfolios
A "portfolio" is simply an organized summary of all the projects and
programs going on within a key business process. The portfolio collects
that information about each project that the process decision-making activities
need to make reasoned judgments.
With the help of software modern portfolio views often take the
form of spreadsheet lists and various embedded graphics. These are often
referred to as "cockpits" or "dashboards" in the local vernacular of the
business process. In NPD each item in the portfolio usually represents
a specific product development project.
Cockpits
Cockpit views of a portfolio usually provide some capabilities for portfolio
managers to maniplate the data so that the outcome of various possibile
decisions can be modeled.
Dashboards
Dashboards are usually highly abstracted, visual representations of
a portfolio. These are especially appropriate presetations for senior managers
with oversight responsibility but little opportunity to make decisions on
a project-by-project basis. |
